Oscar month rolls on with the Best Picture winner of 1976, Rocky.  There's lots of differing opinions on this film going in to the podcast, but what will the crew think after watching (or re-watching) Rocky?

Also we talk about the BAFTAs and new release news for home video and in theaters.

Feb 9, 2017

Oscar month rolls on with Brett's choice of The Deer Hunter from 1978.  We talk about the film, it's place in Oscar history, and it's place in the war film genre.  It's another interesting and entertaining discussion with two hosts having grown up during the Viet Nam war, and one that only heard about it when he wasn't sleeping through history class.

The Cinema Toast Crunch crew also discusses the winners of the DGA and what this could mean for the Oscars.  New release news covers lots of new DVDs and Blu-rays as well as new theatrical films (Lego Batman anyone?).

Feb 5, 2017

It's week one of our Oscar Month celebration as we watch and discuss Grand Hotel, the Best Picture winner from 1932.  This was the first all star, multi-story film to fill the silver screen and Hollywood responded by bestowing it with the Best Picture trophy.  But how well does it hold up?  Was it truly the "Best Picture" of 1932?  The Cinema Toast Crunch crew discusses all of these questions and more.

Also in the Oscar realm, Garvis 2 and Brett each watched an Oscar nominated film last week.  Brett discusses La La Land nominated for 14 Oscars at this month's ceremony.  Garvis talks about The Racket from 1928 which competed for Best Picture against Wings at the very first Oscars.

Plus the results of the SAGs throws the Oscar race a few curve balls which we discuss in our awards talk.  All this and new release news in an extra long episode packed with the patented Cinema Toast Crunch mix of fun and information.

Jan 27, 2017

This week the Cinema Toast Crunch crew discuss The Visitor from 2007.  A very personal film about a college instructor returning to his old apartment in NY only to find that a young couple has taken up residence there in his stead.

Also this week we look at the Oscar nominations and how well our predictions held up.  All this plus new release news for theaters and home video.

Jan 20, 2017

After a fill-in film last week, the CTC crew is finally ready to dive into Prometheus.  Well except for Garvis2 who ended up diving into sporadic bouts of sleep throughout the film.  There is also awards talk as the gang discuss the WGA nominations and boldly make their Oscar nomination picks for Best Picture.  Who will have bragging rights this year?

We also have our regular new release news for theatres and home video.

Jan 12, 2017

Crazy schedules, missing movies, and other issues result in a little different show this week.  Garvis 3 had to work, so it's just Garvis 2 and Brett tonight.  And since Garvis 3 was supposed to bring the movie, it's time to scramble and find something different.  Which brings us to The Hire, s DVD collection of 8 short films produced by BMW starring Clive Owen and directed by some of the best directors working in film including last year's and the year before's Oscar winning best director, Alejandro Gonzalez-Inarritu.

In addition to the movies we also discuss the new releases in theaters and on DVD and Blu-ray.  We talk about the BAFTAs and the Producer's Guild releasing their nominees and the Hollywood Foreign Press announcing the winners of their Golden Globe awards.

Plus if that wasn't enough, Garvis 2 talks about 2 Lava 2 Lantula which he watched this week on DVD.

Jan 6, 2017

It's a full house this week as Jeff returns and brings his lovely wife Dee with him to join Brett and the two Garvii to watch and discuss Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 classic North By Northwest.  With two huge fans of Cary Grant, three people that have never seen the film, and Garvis 3 who had never seen either a Cary Grant film or an Alfred Hitchcock film, the discussion could go on forever (but it actually only lasts a little over 2 hours).

There is a slight echo effect that we could not seem to eliminate that cropped up partway through the episode.  I apologize for that, but hopefully you'll still enjoy our thoughts and comments as well as our regular look at new releases in theaters and on home video.  Also this week the WGA nominees.

Jan 1, 2017

Happy New Year!  This week the Cinema Toast Crunch crew takes a look at Fruitvale Station, a film about a very eventful New Year's Eve for one young man in the Bay Area in 2008.  The film was the directorial debut for Ryan Coogler and it was quite an impressive one at that.  In addition we also discuss the film we most enjoyed in 2016 and the film we're most looking forward to in 2017.  All this plus new release news for home video and in theaters.

Dec 22, 2016

Merry Christmas!  This week Kayla returns to join the Garvi and Brett in a discussion about the feel good holiday family classic, Silent Night, Deadly Night from 1984.  This was the controversial slasher film with a murderous Santa Claus wrecking havoc on a small town at Christmas.

The crew also looks at the new releases on home video and the large number of theatrical openings.  Plus they discuss the Christmas film that they have to watch every year.

Enjoy our seasonal episode and from all of us at Cinema Toast Crunch, Garvis 2, Garvis 3, Kayla, Shawn, Jeff, and Brett, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa, Glorious Eid, and a Festive Festivus to each and every one of our listeners whatever your particular celebration of choice may be.

Dec 16, 2016

The Garvi and Brett are back this week with a look at the 80's classic Blue Velvet from David Lynch.  This is Garvis 3's first exposure to the real world of David Lynch and a chance for a much needed revisit by Garvis 2, who hadn't watched the film since it first came out on home video.

Awards season has kicked off and the CTC trio talk the Critics' Choice awards, the Golden Globe nominees, and the just announced Screen Actors' Guild nominees.  Who looks to be the front runner for these awards and possible Oscar contention?

Finally we have our weekly look at what's new on home video and in theaters.  It's another packed episode for your listening pleasure.

Dec 10, 2016

James Bond meets Indiana Jones... sort of, this week the CTC crew watches 2011's Cowboys & Aliens from director Jon Favreau.  This tale of the wild west confronted by beings from outer space brought differing opinions from our trio.  We also look at new releases for home video and coming to theaters.

Dec 2, 2016

The crew is back with a discussion of 2001's Enemy at the Gates from Jean-Jacques Annaud.  This is a war film told from a very human perspective and like last week's Battleship Potemkin, putting us in the position of cheering for a Russian hero.

New releases are a lot slimmer this week, but Brett fills us in on Pete's Dragon and Don't Breathe (both making their home video debut) while Garvis 2 talks a bit about Sacrifice! out on Blu-ray from Rarovideo this week.

Nov 27, 2016

Welcome to CTC 2.0!  The new podcasting space is set up and everything is in place to bring you a bigger and better show than ever before.  This episode sees Garvis II and Garvis 3 joined by new co-hosts Jeff and Brett to discuss one of the oldest films we've covered, 1925's Battleship Potemkin.  This is one of the most important films in the history of filmmaking due to the numerous techniques that were first used here.  To honor this film and to give the new co-hosts a chance to talk, we also have one of our longest episodes ever.  We also talk about the new releases on home video and in theaters with a huge recommendation for Kubo and the Two Strings.

Nov 24, 2016

After a lapse CTC is back with a brand new episode.  This week the two Garvises (Garvi?) are on their own and discussing Eli Roth's 2013 cannibal tribute The Green Inferno.  Is this a film the guys can sink their teeth into or a huge hunk of rotted meat?  There's also our usual look at new releases on home video and in theaters.  Well they would have been new releases if I could have gotten this edited and posted in a more timely manner.  So enjoy the new release news for last week in this episode.

Oct 4, 2016

This time around Shawn introduces Garvis II to the world of Wes Anderson with The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.  A comedy with a cast of slightly off center characters playing in the world made famous by the late Jacques Cousteau.  There's also lots and lots of DVD talk including a discussion of the newly launched Vestron Video line of DVDs named for the classic video store staple in the horror and exploitation aisle.  It's quite possibly our longest episode yet.

Sep 23, 2016

The original Cinema Toast Crunch crew are back together for a special episode.  In a slight departure they discuss Joe Dante's short film Homecoming which was part of Showtime's Masters of Horror series a few years back.  This episode deals with a presidential election and zombies, so it's perfect for this time of the year.  We also talk a little about Takashi Miike and report on new releases in theaters and on DVD and Blu-ray.

Sep 6, 2016

We're back with another brand new episode.  This time we examine Brian De Palma's classic Phantom of the Paradise from 1974.  With an amazing Paul Williams soundtrack and De Palma's split screens new viewers, like Shawn, are in for a treat.  Also this week we look at new releases for this Labor Day weekend and slightly beyond.  Remember, we're always looking for feedback and movie suggestions.

Aug 26, 2016

Unleashing yet another of the older episodes as we wait for a chance to record a new episode.  This episode the crew discusses what had been the hottest film of the year up until that point, Jurassic World.  Jurassic World would go on to be dethroned by Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens, but this week it had just made its Blu-ray debut and the gang was anxious to talk dinos.

Aug 25, 2016

In this retro episode Kayla chooses her Halloween film and comes out with 1995's Casper starring Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman.  What do the two Garvises (Garvi?) think of this choice?  Hang on for a contentious episode where the definition of what makes a film a Halloween film are discussed and the story of ghostly child is turned into a family comedy.

Aug 24, 2016

Another early episode as Garvis 3 chooses the second film in the Tremors franchise to be his Halloween themed pick.  Okay, it has big monsters in it so we'll let it slide.  How will Garvis 2 and Kayla react to the graboids and other creatures?  Find out here as we discuss Tremors II: Aftershocks.

Aug 23, 2016

Wow, this was the episode that didn't want to get released.  Delays kept us from getting it recorded as early as we would have liked and then a faulty mic provided some of the worst audio we've had in ages.  Fortunately friend of the show Jeff Holbrook of Holbrook New Media stepped in to do some tweaks and adjustments to hopefully make this episode a little less of an assault on the ears.  The worst part is, I felt Shawn and I had a really good discussion on this film.

Aug 15, 2016

As we continue to deal with the flooding of the podcasting studio, here's another blast from the past.  This week we continued our Halloween celebration with Kenny & Company, a delightful family film from the creator of Phantasm that explores what it was like to be a kid in the 1970's and waiting to go out trick or treating.

Jul 29, 2016

Another early episode as we kicked off our months of Halloween films with Lamberto Bava's Demons from 1985.  Garvis III remembered this one scaring him silly as a child and wanted to see if he was finally able to sit through the whole thing.  It's a fun time as we kick off the scary season with an Italian horror classic.

Jul 24, 2016

Another blast from the past episode this time looking at Stardust, the romantic fantasy from the mind of Sandman scribe Neil Gaiman and the director of Kick Ass, Matthew Vaughn.

Jul 22, 2016

Another older episode for your listening pleasure.  This time it's a film that has shown up on many people's list of the worst films of all time, Alone in the Dark.  You know you're looking at a turkey when they cast Tara Reid as a brilliant scientist.  Enjoy this episode available on Libsyn for the first time.
